Retro Racing

Vintage RC has always been a part of Hills Offroad RC, and each year we look at ways to bring back the fun to those whom simply want to enjoy the art of driving.

For 2026, Hills Offroad RC Club becomes 41 years young and looks forward to getting some of the original buggies that saw the track back then cutting some more laps at the venue.
We will be hosting monthly Friday night events for Retro Racing, which will be a fun packed condensed format of racing focused on time brackets instead of the usual focus on particular classes, drive/motor types, competition and outright winners and losers.

What is Retro Racing?
The ruleset will be as simple as cars are to be pre-1992 buggies (modern re-release models are accepted), and plastic buggy kits (Tamiya/Kyosho/Hobbytech etc.), either in 2WD/4WD configuration with a 21.5 brushless or 540 brushed Johnson/Mabuchi (grey/silver can, sealed, fixed timing) motors only. Batteries are free and up to you if you want to dust off the sub-c cells (6 cell maximum) or run your modern Lipo's (2S maximum) for ease.

You can even run 1WD/3WD configurations if you wanted to, but we suggest maybe doing some maintenance prior to showing up if that's the case!

Basically it is 'Run What You Brung', within the above criteria.
No more worries about which class your vehicle fits in, what tyres/wheels, bodies/wings, shocks/springs are right or wrong. Keep them as original as you want or customise and trick-out your vehicle if you see fit. The aim here is to enjoy your hobby the way you want to and driving these vehicles the way they were intended.

What is the Format?

The format will be 1 x 5 minute practice where an entrants top 5 fastest laps average will grade entrants in a time bracket group. Then we will go straight into 3 x 5 minute heads-up style random grid races for each time bracket group.

One entry per driver as all vehicles will be running in one class. Official practice will commence at 6pm with groups to be determined by random draw, with all racing to be finished by 9:30pm with a 30 minute dinner break during the night.

This condensed format is aimed at grouping entrants with those of similar pace for a night of good racing and most importantly fun.

What is for Dinner?

Dinner will be a pizza party with food and drinks for all entrants covered in your entry cost.

Further information

No transponder, no worries. Who cares about lap times and results anyway! You can still come and enjoy the night driving your pride and joy. You will be placed in the highest time group and can still enjoy racing others with similar passion for the hobby we all love.
Depending how popular these nights get, we may change the grading/grouping to cater for particular groupings or types of vehicles dependant on numbers. This will be monitored from event to event and ruleset changes may be activated if and as required.

If you are super competitive, these nights are not for you. If you want to enjoy your racing, drive some cool cars and socialise with like minded individuals, then this is your Friday night hangout where everyone wins!
